Improve Handwriting – Children need both hand strength and dexterity to manipulate a pencil on a paper with the proper pencil grasp. Activities such as coloring will help teach them to hold the writing tool in the correct manner. The attention to detail children gain through this activity will aid them in writing both printed letters and cursive script. Starting out with coloring pages at an early age can help to develop these strengths so that writing comes more easily and naturally.
Teaching colors to kids is best done through play and everyday life experiences. Many children easily learn their colors as parents and caregivers point out color attributes on the objects in children’s environment (e.g., “Throw me the green ball” or “Do you want the red shirt or the yellow shirt?”).
Crisis of adolescence/ artistic decision (14-17 years): In the adolescent stage, a conscious decision must be made to continue drawing and engaging in visual thinking. Images created become highly individualised. Drawing is used in many fields like medicine to teach observation skills in diagnosis, in anthropology as a method of taking field notes, in science to document experiments and processes, in design to conceptualise ideas, in architecture to map out and spatialise buildings, and in technology to develop prototypes.
Alongside a need for drawing skills for those entering employment identified by a range of industries in the creative sectors – animation, architecture, design, fashion, film, theatre, performance and the communication industries – drawing is also widely used within a range of other professions as a means to develop, document, explore, explain, interrogate and plan. This includes the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine and sport.
