Our overarching aim was to affirm the value of drawing, and the reach of the project is more tangible than we could have imagined. We have received phenomenal support from a number of funders, champions and supporters of drawing in our establishment, joining the Jerwood Charitable Foundation family of projects in 2000 and redefining our scope as UK wide. Having collectively raised the game and placed drawing back on the agenda in schools, universities, in teaching and research, galleries and contemporary practices – perhaps it is time to deepen, extend and further evaluate its specific function.
Here are six learning benefits of colouring in activities. Fine Motor Development: Colouring helps children develop good finger grip. It provides an opportunity to practice holding a pencil the correct way and aids in developing those fine motor muscles in their hands, fingers, and wrist. Concentration: Children’s length of concentration develops and improves over time. Colouring requires good concentration and this type of focusing on one task can help a child develop his or her overall concentration levels.
As a primary visual language, essential for communication and expression, drawing is as important as the development of written and verbal skills. The need to understand the world through visual means would seem more acute than ever; images transcend the barriers of language, and enhance communications in an increasingly globalised world.
Crisis of adolescence/ artistic decision (14-17 years): In the adolescent stage, a conscious decision must be made to continue drawing and engaging in visual thinking. Images created become highly individualised. Drawing is used in many fields like medicine to teach observation skills in diagnosis, in anthropology as a method of taking field notes, in science to document experiments and processes, in design to conceptualise ideas, in architecture to map out and spatialise buildings, and in technology to develop prototypes.
